Time clauses: als, wenn, während, nachdem

Als, wenn, während, bevor, nachdem, seit, sobald and bis say when something happens. Like weil, they send the verb to the end.

Als or wenn?

Both mean when, but they are not the same. Als is for one time in the past: one event, or one period of your life. Als Otti nach Berlin kam, kannte er niemanden.

Wenn is for every time (immer wenn), in the past too, and for the present and the future: Wenn Oma kam, gab es immer Kuchen. Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich schwimmen.

A quick test: once in the past → als. Every time, or not in the past → wenn.

When?WordExample
once in the pastalsAls Otti nach Berlin kam, …
every time in the pastwennWenn Oma kam, …
now or in the futurewennWenn ich Zeit habe, …

Während, bevor, nachdem

Während (while): two things happen at the same time. Während Bruno kochte, deckte Otti den Tisch.

Bevor (before): the clause happens after the main sentence. Bevor du gehst, mach bitte das Licht aus.

Nachdem (after): the clause happens first, and its tense is one step further back than the main sentence. Present in the main sentence → perfect after nachdem. Simple past in the main sentence → past perfect after nachdem.

Main clauseAfter nachdemExample
PresentPerfektNachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich spazieren.
PräteritumPlusquamperfektNachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

Seit, sobald, bis

Seit or seitdem (since): something started then and is still going on, so the main sentence is often in the present. Seit Otti in Berlin wohnt, lernt er jeden Tag Deutsch.

Sobald (as soon as): the main sentence follows straight after. Sobald ich zu Hause bin, rufe ich dich an.

Bis (until): the main sentence goes on up to that moment. Wir warten, bis der Regen aufhört.

All these words send the verb to the end. When the clause comes first, the main verb follows right after the comma, as you know from A2.

Reasons and contrasts: weil, denn, deshalb, obwohl, trotzdem

German has several words for a reason and for a contrast. They mean much the same, but each puts the verb in another place: at the end, in second place or right after the word.
