   Frau Hilde, wie war Berlin damals, als Sie jung waren?

   Translation

   Frau Hilde, what was Berlin like back then, when you were young?

   Frau Hilde

   Ganz anders, mein Lieber. Mitten durch die Stadt stand eine Mauer.

   Translation

   Completely different, my dear. A wall ran right through the middle of the city.

   Otti

   Und auf welcher Seite waren Sie?

   Translation

   And which side were you on?

   Frau Hilde

   Im Osten, hier in Pankow. Meiner Schwester im Westen konnte ich fast drei Jahrzehnte lang nur schreiben.

   Translation

   In the East, here in Pankow. For almost three decades I could only write to my sister in the West.

   Otti

   Drei Jahrzehnte! Erinnern Sie sich an den Mauerfall?

   Translation

   Three decades! Do you remember the fall of the Wall?

   Frau Hilde

   Als wäre es gestern gewesen. Ich schlief schon, als plötzlich jemand im Haus rief: „Die Mauer ist offen!“

   Translation

   As if it were yesterday. I was already asleep when suddenly someone in the building shouted: "The Wall is open!"

   Und dann?

   Translation

   And then?

   Frau Hilde

   Ich lief sofort los, obwohl es mitten in der Nacht war. Sobald ich drüben war, rief ich bei meiner Schwester an.

   Translation

   I ran off at once, even though it was the middle of the night. As soon as I was over there, I phoned my sister.

   Otti

   Wie schön! Hat sich Berlin seitdem sehr verändert?

   Translation

   How wonderful! Has Berlin changed a lot since then?

    Frau Hilde

    Sehr! Während früher hier vieles grau war, ist heutzutage alles bunt. Aber die Veränderung kam so schnell.

    Translation

    Very much! While a lot here used to be grey, nowadays everything is colourful. But the change came so quickly.

    Otti

    Und die Zukunft? Was erhoffen Sie sich?

    Translation

    And the future? What do you hope for?

12. 

    Frau Hilde

    Dass die Gegenwart die Vergangenheit nicht vergisst. Und dass du mich weiter besuchst, bevor ich selbst alles vergesse.

    Translation

    That the present doesn't forget the past. And that you keep visiting me before I forget everything myself.
