Questions and Answers

What people usually ask before they start.

Is Hallo Otti free?

Yes. Learning with Otti is free, with no ads. You only need a free account to save your progress.

Do I need to know any German?

Not a word. Otti starts with "Hallo" and ordering a coffee (level A1) and goes all the way up to C1, so you won't outgrow him any time soon.

Is Hallo Otti good for children?

Yes, and with Otti learning is even more fun for children: pictures like in a picture book, Otti and his animal friends, short five-minute sessions, and a mistake is a step forward, not a failure. Words, pictures and the dictionary are open to everyone without an account. You must be 16 to create an account; a younger child needs the consent of a parent or guardian, and learning together with an adult is the nicest way anyway.

How much time do I need a day?

Five to ten minutes are plenty. You can set a daily goal in your profile, and on a busy day even a single card makes Otti happy.

How does Otti know when to repeat a word?

He uses FSRS, an algorithm built for spaced repetition. After each answer it estimates how well you know the word and works out the day you'd be about to forget it. That's the day the word comes back.

In which languages can I learn?

Every word has its meaning in English, Ukrainian and Russian, and the whole site can switch to German too, for when you fancy a challenge. Change the language any time at the top of the page.

Is there an app?

No download needed: Hallo Otti runs in any browser, on your phone or your computer. Add it to your home screen and it opens just like an app.

On an iPhone or iPad: Safari's Share button, then "Add to Home Screen". On Android or a computer: install it from the browser menu.
What happens to my data?

We keep only what learning needs - your name and email, your answers and notes, your searches and Otti's progress. In your profile you can download all of it or delete your account at any time.

Who makes Hallo Otti?

A small team, not a big company or a language school. We make Hallo Otti for everyone learning German, above all for people who live in Germany or are moving there. Who runs it, with name and address, is in the Impressum at the bottom of every page. The words' grammar comes from the German Wiktionary and their frequency from Wortschatz Leipzig; the terms of use name every source and its licence.
