What's New

We build "Hallo Otti!" for everyone who learns German for everyday life. Here we write down what changes and why, the newest first.

  1. The Der, Die, Das Game

On the page Der, Die or Das? you can now play: 20 nouns, 60 seconds, three buttons. After a wrong answer Otti shows the right article and the rule for the ending. At the end you see your score and the words to look at again, and a picture with a link challenges your friends. Free, without an account.
  2. Lots of Great Changes at Once

Our biggest update so far. We had the whole app tested from the first click to the last C1 word, on phones, tablets and computers, and improved what we found:
    • a calm learning screen: no menus, a progress bar, and you see at once whether your answer was right
    • a new word has two buttons, "Show Again" and "Got It", and every session ends with a summary of your day
    • the exercises take turns, and the answer options come from the same topic, so they make you think
    • reflexive verbs are learned with "sich", and words used only in the plural with "die … (Pl.)"
    • new words for letters from your landlord and your bank (Abrechnung, Nachzahlung, anbei …) and the days of the week
    • decode a letter shows the rare words first, knows the polite "Sie", and you can try a sample letter
    • the dictionary starts with the most common words, and search finds what you mean more precisely
    • when today's words are done, Otti suggests the next scenario, and after the last C1 word a little celebration waits
    • dark mode follows your phone's setting
    • a page after sign-up that helps if the email doesn't arrive, a shorter welcome tour, and faster pages
  3. Frau Hilde Helps With Every Word

A big round of changes, many of them from your messages:
    • every word has "How to Remember It": Frau Hilde's memory trick for it
    • "Write it in German" has letter tiles, so the phone keyboard stays closed
    • the level test asks 10 questions per level, grammar included, stops when you press "That's All I Know", and your result picture can be downloaded
    • scenarios are grouped by level, and a level opens when the one before is done or skipped with a short check
    • when you start a scenario, we tell you when its words come, and they come before older new words
    • a list of the words you are learning, with the day each one comes back
    • Otti has 12 things to collect, and his map of Berlin is on his page now
    • the declension table shows a sentence for each case, and every example can be played
    • questions and answers, grammar by level and der, die or das by letter
  4. Just Five Minutes

The daily reminder now asks „5 Minuten?“, and a tap opens your cards with a timer. When the five minutes are up, Otti says so, and you decide: stop with a clear conscience or keep going.
On a busy day five minutes are easier to start than "a lesson". The same timer is on your home page.
  5. Otti Is a Friend, Not a Streak Counter

We took the streak out. One missed day turned weeks of work into a zero, and many people quit right after it. Nobody should feel punished for a day off.
Otti's levels are a friendship now, from strangers to neighbours in Berlin. After five days without learning it fades a little each day, but your words and Otti's things always stay.
Mistakes are part of learning, so fixing one now earns points too, and so does asking Otti to explain it.

Thank you for learning with Otti!
