What's your German level?

Find out in about five minutes, free and without sign-up: words and grammar from everyday life in Germany, level after level from A1 to C1. At the end Otti gives you a card to share and a challenge for your friends.

How it works

Words and grammar from everyday life
From the bakery to the landlord: choose what a German word means or the German for a meaning, and fill a gap in a sentence. One tap per answer.
Level after level
You start at A1, ten questions a level. Nine right, and the next level comes. Once a level is clearly too hard, the test stops on its own, and you can end it any time with "That's All I Know".
Your card and a challenge
Your level and what it means in real life. Share it and see if your friends can beat it.

An honest note: in a few minutes the test checks your vocabulary, the heart of every level, and a little grammar. It is a good first estimate, not a certificate like Goethe or telc.

What the levels mean

  • A0

    Just starting

Otti is starting with you. The first words are the most exciting ones.

  • A1

    Orders Brötchen like a local

Greets people, says who they are, shops and asks the way in short, simple sentences.

  • A2

Survives small talk with the neighbours

Talks about the day, family, work and the weather, and gets along at the shops, the doctor's and the station.

  • B1

Holds their own at a WG party

Follows everyday conversations, tells a story, says what they think and handles most situations on their own.

  • B2

Argues about the Nebenkosten with the landlord

Speaks fluently with native speakers, follows films and the news, and argues a point.

  • C1

    Gets the jokes

Understands long, demanding texts and what goes unsaid, and speaks freely at work and at university.

Your card at the end

This is B1. Yours shows your level with a playful title: made for your story or a chat.
