How and with what result: indem, sodass, ohne … zu
Indem and dadurch, dass say how something is done; sodass and so …, dass say what it leads to. Je … umso links two things that grow together, and ohne … zu and anstatt … zu say what doesn't happen.
Indem and dadurch, dass: how?
Indem answers the question Wie? (how?) and names the way to a result: Otti spart Geld, indem er mit dem Rad fährt. Like weil, it sends the verb to the end. In English you say by doing: Otti saves money by cycling.
Dadurch, dass means the same, but it comes in two parts: dadurch stands in the main clause, and the dass clause follows. Otti spart dadurch Geld, dass er mit dem Rad fährt. The whole dadurch, dass part can also come first: Dadurch, dass er mit dem Rad fährt, spart Otti Geld.
Don't mix up indem with in dem from the relative clauses you know from B1: das Haus, in dem ich wohne.
| Main clause | indem (verb at the end) |
|---|---|
| Otti spart Geld, | indem er mit dem Rad fährt. |
| Frida trainiert ihre Ausdauer, | indem sie jeden Morgen läuft. |
| Man lernt Wörter am besten, | indem man sie oft benutzt. |
Sodass and so …, dass: the result
Sodass (also written so dass) brings in the result: Es regnete stark, sodass das Konzert ausfiel. The verb goes to the end, and the sodass clause always comes after the main clause.
If you want to say how strong something was, split it: so goes before the adjective in the main clause, and dass starts the result. Es regnete so stark, dass das Konzert ausfiel.
You know the same idea from deshalb (B1): Es regnete stark, deshalb fiel das Konzert aus. And don't mix up sodass with damit: damit is a goal that someone wants, sodass is what really happens.
| Word | Example |
|---|---|
| sodass | Es regnete stark, sodass das Konzert ausfiel. |
| so …, dass | Es regnete so stark, dass das Konzert ausfiel. |
| deshalb | Es regnete stark, deshalb fiel das Konzert aus. |
| damit (purpose) | Wir gehen früh los, damit wir einen Platz bekommen. |
Je … umso and je nachdem
You know je … desto from B1: Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich. Umso works exactly like desto and is just as common, in writing too: Je früher wir anfangen, umso schneller sind wir fertig.
A noun or a whole group of words can follow the comparative: je mehr Zeit, je größer die Wohnung. The verb of the je part still goes to the very end: Je mehr Zeit Lotte hat, umso gründlicher arbeitet sie.
Umso also works on its own after a reason: Die Prüfung war schwer, umso größer ist die Freude. Umso besser! means all the better. And je nachdem (depending on) leaves the answer open: Je nachdem, wie das Wetter wird, fahren wir an den See oder ins Museum.
| Part with je (verb at the end) | Part with umso (verb right after) |
|---|---|
| Je mehr Zeit Lotte hat, | umso gründlicher arbeitet sie. |
| Je länger Emil offline ist, | umso ruhiger wird er. |
| Je größer die Wohnung ist, | umso höher ist die Miete. |
Ohne … zu and anstatt … zu: what does not happen
Ohne … zu says that something you would expect doesn't happen: Emil ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden (without saying goodbye). Anstatt … zu, or just statt … zu, says that one thing happens in place of another: Anstatt den Bus zu nehmen, geht Kalle zu Fuß.
They work like um … zu from B1: no subject, zu and the infinitive at the very end, and with a separable verb zu goes in the middle (aufzuräumen). So both parts must be about the same person.
With two different people, use ohne dass and anstatt dass: a whole clause with the verb at the end. Emil ging, ohne dass es jemand bemerkte.
| Word | Same person | Another person |
|---|---|---|
| ohne | Emil ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden. | Emil ging, ohne dass es jemand bemerkte. |
| anstatt | Anstatt zu kochen, bestellt Bruno heute Essen. | Anstatt dass Bruno kocht, bestellen wir heute Essen. |
