   Emil

   Kalle, was machst du mit dem Fernglas in der Hecke?

   Translation

   Kalle, what are you doing in the hedge with binoculars?

2. 

   Kalle

   Psst! Ich zähle Vögel für die Wissenschaft. Eine Stunde lang notiere ich jede Art, die ich beobachte.

   Translation

   Shh! I'm counting birds for science. For an hour I write down every species I observe.

3. 

   Emil

   Eine ganze Stunde stillsitzen? Unmöglich! Und wozu?

   Translation

   Sitting still for a whole hour? Impossible! And what for?

4. 

   Kalle

   Die Forscher wollen wissen, welche Arten wo vorkommen und welche bedroht sind. Bisher: drei Amseln, zwei Meisen … und ein Spatz, der sehr schnell redet.

   Translation

   The researchers want to know which species live where and which are endangered. So far: three blackbirds, two tits … and a sparrow who talks very fast.

   Emil

   Sehr witzig. Zählst du mich etwa auch?

   Translation

   Very funny. Are you counting me too?

   Kalle

   Natürlich! In Berlin gibt es zwar viele Spatzen, aber in anderen Städten werden sie seltener. Ihnen fehlen Lebensraum und Insekten.

   Translation

   Of course! There are lots of sparrows in Berlin, it's true, but in other cities they're getting rarer. They lack habitat and insects.

   Emil

   Uns Spatzen? Dann bin ich ja ein Fall für den Naturschutz! Wo sollen wir denn nisten?

   Translation

   Us sparrows? Then I'm a case for nature conservation! So where are we supposed to nest?

   Kalle

   In Hecken und unter alten Dächern. Wenn die verschwinden, finden die Vögel keinen Platz mehr für ihr Nest, und manche Arten sterben aus.

   Translation

   In hedges and under old roofs. If those disappear, the birds can't find anywhere for their nests any more, and some species die out.

   Emil

   Und was kann ich tun? Außer schnell zu fliegen?

   Translation

   And what can I do? Apart from flying fast?

    Kalle

    Heimische Blumen pflanzen. Je mehr Vielfalt, desto mehr Bienen und Insekten - und desto mehr Futter für junge Vögel.

    Translation

    Plant native flowers. The more variety, the more bees and insects - and the more food for young birds.

    Emil

    Mache ich! Aber jetzt muss ich los. Notier: ein Spatz, sehr empfindlich, schon wieder unterwegs!

    Translation

    Will do! But now I have to go. Write it down: one sparrow, very sensitive, already on the move again!
