Indirect speech: Er sagt, er habe keine Zeit
To pass on what someone said, German has its own verb form, the Konjunktiv I: Emil sagt, er habe keine Zeit. It shows that these are someone else's words, and you meet it above all in the news and in written texts.
er habe, er sei: the Konjunktiv I
Emil says Ich habe keine Zeit, and you pass it on to Lotte: Emil sagt, er habe keine Zeit. This is indirect speech (reported speech). The person changes (ich becomes er), and the verb takes the Konjunktiv I: habe instead of hat.
You make the Konjunktiv I from the stem of the infinitive and an e. You need it mostly for er, sie and es, and there it has no -t: er habe, sie komme, es könne, er werde. sein has forms of its own: er sei, sie seien.
The reported words can follow straight after the comma, with the verb in second place: Emil sagt, er habe keine Zeit. Or they come with dass, and then the verb goes to the end: Emil sagt, dass er keine Zeit habe.
| Infinitive | Indicative | Konjunktiv I |
|---|---|---|
| sein | er ist | er sei |
| haben | er hat | er habe |
| werden | er wird | er werde |
| können | er kann | er könne |
| müssen | er muss | er müsse |
| kommen | er kommt | er komme |
| wissen | er weiß | er wisse |
Past, future, questions, requests
For the past, take habe or sei with the participle, the same choice as in the Perfekt: Emil sagt, er habe den Film schon gesehen. Frida sagt, sie sei mit dem Rad gekommen. It doesn't matter whether the person used the Perfekt or the Präteritum.
For the future, take werde with the infinitive: Kalle sagt, er werde morgen anrufen.
A reported question keeps its W-word or gets ob, and the verb goes to the end: Otti fragt, ob die Stelle noch frei sei. A request or an instruction becomes sollen: Die Ärztin sagt, ich solle das Knie schonen.
| Direct speech | Reported speech |
|---|---|
| Ich habe den Film gesehen. | Er sagt, er habe den Film gesehen. |
| Ich bin mit dem Rad gekommen. | Sie sagt, sie sei mit dem Rad gekommen. |
| Ich werde morgen anrufen. | Er sagt, er werde morgen anrufen. |
| Ist die Stelle noch frei? | Er fragt, ob die Stelle noch frei sei. |
| Schonen Sie das Knie! | Sie sagt, ich solle das Knie schonen. |
When the Konjunktiv II steps in
The Konjunktiv I has a weak spot: in many persons it looks exactly like the normal present. Die Nachbarn sagen, sie haben nichts gehört: here nobody can see that it is indirect speech.
Then you take the Konjunktiv II, which you know from B1: Die Nachbarn sagen, sie hätten nichts gehört. This happens above all with ich, wir and sie (plural): ich hätte, wir könnten, sie müssten. For most other verbs the Konjunktiv II is würde with the infinitive: Sie sagen, sie würden später kommen.
sei is the exception: it looks different from the present in every person (ich sei, wir seien), so it always stays.
| Verb | Indicative | Konjunktiv I | Reported speech |
|---|---|---|---|
| haben | sie haben | sie haben | sie hätten |
| können | sie können | sie können | sie könnten |
| kommen | sie kommen | sie kommen | sie würden kommen |
| sein | sie sind | sie seien | sie seien |
The news and everyday speech
You meet the Konjunktiv I above all in written German: in the news, in newspapers, in reports and in the minutes of a meeting. With it a journalist shows where a statement comes from, without saying that it is true: Die Firma erklärt, die App sei sicher.
In conversation the Konjunktiv I sounds formal. Most people use the normal form, the indicative (Emil hat gesagt, er hat keine Zeit), or the Konjunktiv II (Emil hat gesagt, er hätte keine Zeit). Only er sei is still heard quite often: Er meint, das sei kein Problem.
So: recognise the Konjunktiv I when you read, and use it in formal letters and texts. With friends the indicative is just fine.
| Conversation | News and letters |
|---|---|
| Er hat gesagt, er hat keine Zeit. | Er sagte, er habe keine Zeit. |
| Sie meint, sie würde später kommen. | Sie erklärte, sie werde später kommen. |
| Die Firma sagt, die App ist sicher. | Die Firma erklärt, die App sei sicher. |
