Prepositions with the genitive: innerhalb, aufgrund, dank

You know wegen, trotz, während and statt from B1. Written German has more prepositions with the genitive, like innerhalb, außerhalb, aufgrund, bezüglich and dank, while in speech the dative often takes its place.

Reason and contrast: aufgrund, dank, trotz

You know from B1 that wegen gives a reason and trotz a contrast: wegen des Staus, trotz des Regens. Two more words give a reason.

Aufgrund means the same as wegen but sounds more official. You read it in letters, announcements and the news: Aufgrund eines Streiks fallen heute viele Züge aus.

Dank (thanks to) gives a reason for something good: Dank deiner Hilfe habe ich die Prüfung bestanden. For a bad result you take wegen. After dank the dative is correct too: dank dem guten Wetter.

Time and place: innerhalb, außerhalb

Innerhalb (within, inside) and außerhalb (outside) work for places and for time: innerhalb der Stadt, außerhalb Berlins; innerhalb einer Woche, außerhalb der Arbeitszeit. Während (during), which you know from B1, is only for time.

If you can't see the genitive, because a plural noun has no article, take von + dative: innerhalb von zwei Wochen. In speech people often say innerhalb von and außerhalb von anyway: außerhalb von Berlin.

These words are typical of contracts, instructions and official letters: Bitte zahlen Sie innerhalb von 14 Tagen.

außerhalbaußerhalb der Arbeitszeitaußerhalb Berlins

Instead of and regarding: anstatt, bezüglich

Anstatt means the same as statt (instead of) and is only a little more formal: anstatt eines Briefes, statt eines Briefes.

Bezüglich (regarding, about) names the topic of a letter or an email. It is very formal, and you meet it almost only in writing, often at the start: Bezüglich Ihrer Anfrage vom 3. Mai … In a chat you would simply say wegen: Wegen Samstag: Kommst du?

In speech: wegen dem, trotz dem, statt dem

In everyday speech many people put the dative after wegen, trotz and statt: wegen dem Regen, trotz dem Stau, statt einem Brief. You hear it everywhere, and among friends it is fine. In an email, an essay or the B2 exam, write the genitive. After aufgrund and bezüglich, which belong to written German anyway, always use the genitive.

With a pronoun, speech says wegen mir, wegen dir. Written German has one word: meinetwegen, deinetwegen. Meinetwegen also means "fine by me": Meinetwegen können wir auch später essen.

Relative clauses with wer, was and wo: alles, was ich weiß

Not every relative clause starts with der, die or das. Wer means anyone who, was comes after alles, etwas or das Beste, and with a preposition was becomes worüber or womit.
