Prepositions of formal German: angesichts, infolge, zufolge
You know aufgrund, dank and bezüglich from B2. Reports, contracts, academic texts and the news use many more: angesichts, infolge, mangels, kraft, hinsichtlich, zwecks, anlässlich, seitens and ungeachtet take the genitive, and zufolge follows its noun and takes the dative. In conversation a plain wegen, für or von is usually better.
Reasons: angesichts, infolge, mangels, kraft
Like aufgrund, these four give a reason, and all of them take the genitive. Each one adds its own shade of meaning.
Angesichts (in view of, given) names a situation that you see and react to: Angesichts der hohen Mieten ziehen viele an den Stadtrand. Infolge (as a result of) names an event that caused something: Infolge des Sturms fiel der Strom aus. Before a plural noun without an article you say infolge von: infolge von Bauarbeiten.
Mangels (for lack of) gives a reason that is missing: mangels genauer Daten. The noun after it often has no article: mangels Interesse. Kraft (by virtue of) is the rarest. It says that someone may do something because of their role, and you meet it in contracts and statutes: kraft seiner Funktion als Vorstand.
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| angesichts | a situation | angesichts der hohen Mieten |
| infolge | an event as the cause | infolge des Sturms |
| mangels | something is missing | mangels genauer Daten |
| kraft | a role or a right | kraft seiner Funktion |

Topic, purpose, occasion, source: hinsichtlich, zwecks, anlässlich, seitens
Hinsichtlich (with regard to) names a topic, like bezüglich from B2. It is typical of reports and academic texts: hinsichtlich der Kosten, hinsichtlich der Methode.
Zwecks (for the purpose of) names a goal. It sounds like office German, and the noun after it usually has no article: zwecks Terminabsprache, zwecks besserer Planung.
Anlässlich (on the occasion of) names an occasion such as a birthday, an anniversary or a visit: anlässlich des Jubiläums. Seitens (on the part of) says who something comes from, usually a group or an organisation: seitens der Kunden, seitens des Verlags.
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| hinsichtlich | a topic | hinsichtlich der Methode |
| zwecks | a goal | zwecks besserer Planung |
| anlässlich | an occasion | anlässlich des Jubiläums |
| seitens | from whom? | seitens der Kunden |

Despite and according to: ungeachtet, zufolge
Ungeachtet (regardless of, despite) means the same as trotz but sounds more formal. You read it in the news and in speeches: Ungeachtet der Kritik hält die Firma an ihrem Plan fest.
Zufolge (according to) names a source: a study, a report, a newspaper. It is the odd one out: it comes after the noun and takes the dative. Einer Studie zufolge …, dem Bericht zufolge …
In everyday German you say laut or nach instead, both before the noun: laut einer Studie, nach dem Wetterbericht. Keep zufolge for the texts you write.
| Preposition | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ungeachtet | Genitive | ungeachtet der Kritik |
| zufolge | Dative, after the noun | einer Studie zufolge |
| laut (everyday speech) | Dative, before the noun | laut einer Studie |
-

When wegen or für is better
These prepositions make a written text short and precise, so reports, contracts, academic texts and the news love them. In a conversation most of them sound stiff: Zwecks Abendessen treffen wir uns um acht sounds like a joke. Among friends, say wegen, für, von, zu or trotz.
Even in writing, don't pile them up. A sentence with three of them is hard to read, and a clause with weil, obwohl or damit is often clearer. You know this from the B2 lesson on nominal style.
In speech many people put the dative after wegen and trotz, as you know from B2. After the words of this lesson always write the genitive; only zufolge takes the dative.
