  1. Emil

Was sehen wir hier eigentlich?

    Translation

Hello and welcome to a new episode! I'm standing with a historian in Gesundbrunnen, in front of a perfectly ordinary front building. What are we actually looking at?

  2. Historian

    Translation

A typical tenement from the Gründerzeit: at the front the splendid façade facing the street, behind it side wings, rear buildings and courtyard after courtyard.

  3. Emil

    Translation

I counted earlier: five back courtyards behind a single front building! Who on earth lived there?

  4. Historian

    Translation

The middle classes at the front, the working-class families at the back. With industrialisation came a huge influx from the countryside, and Gesundbrunnen became a working-class district.

  5. Emil

    Translation

And the housing shortage back then was probably even worse than today, right?

  6. Historian

Allerdings.

    Translation

Indeed. Often eight people lived crammed into one room and a kitchen, and during the day the bed was let out to a night-shift lodger as well.

  7. Emil

Unglaublich.

    Translation

Incredible. By the way, there's a memorial plaque here on the wall - what does it commemorate?

  8. Historian

    Translation

A print shop in the rear building, where a workers' newspaper was made around 1900. The street has been renamed twice since then, but the plaque reminds us who made history here in a small way.

  9. Emil

    Translation

So a street remembers, even if it's long had another name.

  10. Historian

    Translation

You could put it that way. City history isn't only in archives, after all, but in every stairwell.

  11. Emil

    Translation

I couldn't have wished for a nicer closing line for the podcast. Thank you very much - and thanks to all of you for listening!
