   Lotte, du bist ja völlig vertieft. Was ist das denn?

   Translation

   Lotte, you're completely absorbed. What is that?

   Lotte

   Ein Fachartikel. Eine Fachzeitschrift will, dass ich die Studie begutachte: Angeblich singen Stadtvögel lauter, wo mehr Verkehr ist.

   Translation

   A scientific article. A journal wants me to review the study: city birds supposedly sing louder where there's more traffic.

   Otti

   Klingt doch einleuchtend. Bei dem Krach würde ich auch lauter singen.

   Translation

   Sounds plausible enough. With that racket I'd sing louder too.

   Lotte

   Einleuchtend schon, aber ist die Hypothese auch belegt? Die Stichprobe umfasst ganze zwölf Amseln aus einem einzigen Park.

   Translation

   Plausible, yes, but is the hypothesis actually backed up? The sample consists of all of twelve blackbirds from a single park.

   Zwölf Amseln … Das ist nicht gerade repräsentativ, oder?

   Translation

   Twelve blackbirds… That's not exactly representative, is it?

   Eben. Und selbst wenn die Korrelation signifikant wäre, wäre die Kausalität damit noch lange nicht bewiesen.

   Translation

   Exactly. And even if the correlation were significant, that would be a long way from proving causation.

   Ist das nicht dasselbe?

   Translation

   Isn't that the same thing?

   Lotte

   Nicht ganz. Vielleicht leben an großen Straßen einfach andere Arten, die ohnehin lauter singen. Ein Zusammenhang allein verrät noch nichts über die Ursache.

   Translation

   Not quite. Maybe different species that sing louder anyway simply live by big roads. A connection alone tells you nothing yet about the cause.

   Dann kannst du die Studie also widerlegen?

   Translation

   So can you refute the study, then?

    Lotte

    Widerlegen nicht, aber die Schlussfolgerung lässt sich aus dem Befund nicht ableiten. Methodisch wird die Arbeit auf wackligen Beinen stehen, solange die Stichprobe so klein ist.

    Translation

    Not refute, but the conclusion can't be drawn from the finding. Methodologically the paper will be on shaky ground as long as the sample is this small.

    Und zerreißt du sie in deinem Gutachten jetzt in der Luft?

    Translation

    And are you going to tear it to pieces in your review now?

    Lotte

    Nein, streng, aber fair: drei weitere Parks, dann hätte die Studie echte Aussagekraft. Kritisch ja, unfreundlich nein.

    Translation

    No, strict but fair: three more parks, and then the study would have real significance. Critical, yes; unkind, no.
