   Frida

   Glückwunsch zum Jubiläum, Emil! Hättest du das vor zehn Jahren für möglich gehalten?

   Translation

   Congratulations on the anniversary, Emil! Would you have thought it possible ten years ago?

2. 

   Emil

   Nie im Leben! Der erste Winter war eine einzige Durststrecke: tagelang kein Auftrag.

   Translation

   Never in my life! The first winter was one long lean spell: no orders for days.

   Frida

   Und dann die Touren bei minus zehn Grad über die Oberbaumbrücke - das war doch kräftezehrend.

   Translation

   And then those rides over the Oberbaum Bridge at minus ten - that was draining, wasn't it.

   Emil

   Kräftezehrend und mühsam, klar. Aber die Strapazen haben mich geprägt: Heute erkenne ich jede Straße schon am Kopfsteinpflaster.

   Translation

   Draining and hard going, sure. But the hardships shaped me: today I can recognise every street by its cobblestones alone.

   Verzeihung, dass ich mich einmische - als Ihr ältester Stammkunde bringe ich Ihnen zum Jubiläum einen Kuchen.

   Translation

   Forgive me for butting in - as your oldest regular customer, I'm bringing you a cake for the anniversary.

   Emil

   Wie schön, dass Sie da sind! Ohne Ihre Aufträge hätte ich die ersten Jahre kaum bewältigt.

   Translation

   How lovely that you're here! Without your orders I'd hardly have got through the first years.

7. Regular customer

   Und ohne Sie wäre so manches Buch nie pünktlich da gewesen. Was ist heute eigentlich anders als damals?

   Translation

   And without you many a book would never have arrived on time. So what is actually different today from back then?

   Emil

   Vor allem die Arbeitsbedingungen. Damals war ich ein Kurier im Dauerstress, heute haben unsere Kurierinnen und Kuriere geregelte Schichten und ein warmes Büro.

   Translation

   Above all, the working conditions. Back then I was a courier under constant stress; today our couriers have regular shifts and a warm office.

   Frida

   Und die Arbeitsbelastung? Vor Weihnachten sitzt du doch trotzdem wieder selbst auf dem Rad.

   Translation

   And the workload? Before Christmas you're back on the bike yourself anyway, aren't you?

    Emil

    Erwischt. Ganz ruhig ist der Arbeitsalltag halt nie geworden - so ist das eben mit der Selbstständigkeit.

    Translation

    Caught out. Everyday working life has never got really quiet - that's just how it is when you're self-employed.

    Frida

    Wenn du so auf deinen Werdegang zurückblickst, mit all deiner Erfahrung - worauf bist du am meisten stolz?

    Translation

    When you look back on your career like this, with all your experience - what are you proudest of?

    Emil

    Dass wir alle Höhen und Tiefen gemeinsam bewältigt haben - für mich die größte Errungenschaft. Und jetzt los zum Rückblick, sonst ist der Kuchen weg!

    Translation

    That we've come through all the ups and downs together - for me the greatest achievement. And now on to the look back, or the cake will be gone!
