Noun and verb as a pair: eine Entscheidung treffen

In eine Entscheidung treffen the noun carries the meaning, and the verb hardly means anything on its own. Such pairs are everywhere in work emails, reports and the news, so learn them as one unit.

The noun carries the meaning

Some verbs, like treffen, stellen, bringen, kommen and nehmen, often lose most of their own meaning. In eine Entscheidung treffen nobody meets or hits anything: it simply means entscheiden (to decide). The noun says what happens, and the verb only carries the grammar: the person ending and the tense.

German calls these pairs Funktionsverbgefüge. Many of them have a simple verb beside them: einen Vorschlag machen = vorschlagen, Kritik üben = kritisieren, eine Frage stellen = fragen.

Learn each pair as one unit, like the verbs with prepositions from B1, because you can't swap the verb. In English you make a decision, but in German it is eine Entscheidung treffen, never machen.

Word order and nicht or kein

The verb works as usual: in second place in a main clause, at the end after weil or dass. The noun goes to the end of the main clause, much like the prefix of a separable verb: Wir treffen morgen nach der Besprechung eine Entscheidung.

Many pairs have a preposition inside: zur Verfügung stellen (to make available), in Frage kommen (to be an option; also written infrage), in Kontakt bleiben (to stay in touch). The preposition and the noun stay together at the end.

To say no, look at the noun. A pair with ein or with no article takes kein: keine Entscheidung treffen, keine Kritik üben. A pair with a preposition takes nicht: Das kommt nicht in Frage.

Where you meet them

These pairs are typical of written German: work emails, the minutes of a meeting, reports, the news. They sound more formal than the simple verb. And with a noun you can easily add an adjective: eine schnelle Entscheidung treffen, einen guten Vorschlag machen, scharfe Kritik üben.

Some pairs have no simple verb that means the same, so you need them in everyday speech too: Rücksicht nehmen auf (to be considerate of), in Kontakt bleiben, sich Mühe geben (to make an effort), Bescheid geben (to let someone know).

Pairs with kommen often have a passive meaning: Das Thema kommt morgen zur Sprache means Das Thema wird morgen diskutiert. You know the passive from B1; here the noun does the same job.

Prepositions with the genitive: innerhalb, aufgrund, dank

You know wegen, trotz, während and statt from B1. Written German has more prepositions with the genitive, like innerhalb, außerhalb, aufgrund, bezüglich and dank, while in speech the dative often takes its place.
