Two-way prepositions: wo? or wohin?

Nine prepositions can take the dative or the accusative. If something is in a place (wo?), use the dative; if it moves to a place (wohin?), use the accusative.

Where or where to?

These nine prepositions can take two cases: in, an, auf, unter, über, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen.

Ask a question. Wo? (where?) asks about the place where something is: use the dative. Wohin? (where to?) asks about a movement to a new place: use the accusative.

Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. Wo? On the table: dative. Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. Wohin? Onto the table: accusative.

überüber dem Sofaüber das Sofa
vorvor dem Hausvor das Haus
hinterhinter dem Schrankhinter den Schrank
nebenneben der Türneben die Tür
zwischenzwischen den Stühlenzwischen die Stühle

legen or liegen?

Three pairs of verbs make this easier. legen, stellen and hängen are actions: you put something somewhere (wohin? + accusative). liegen, stehen and hängen say where something is (wo? + dative).

legen and liegen are for flat things, like a book or a phone. stellen and stehen are for things that stand upright, like a bottle or a chair. hängen is the same word for both: Ich hänge die Jacke an die Tür. Die Jacke hängt an der Tür.

im, ins, am: the short forms

in and an often merge with the article: in dem → im, in das → ins, an dem → am, an das → ans.

The short forms are what you hear every day: Ich bin im Park. Wir gehen ins Kino. Die Katze sitzt am Fenster.
