Grammar · B1
Purpose: um … zu, damit and zu + infinitive
Um … zu and damit say what something is for. And many verbs and phrases take a second verb with zu: Ich habe vergessen, dich anzurufen.
Um … zu: the goal
Um … zu says why someone does something: the goal. Otti lernt Deutsch, um in Berlin zu arbeiten. Um comes first, and zu with the infinitive (the basic form of the verb, as in the dictionary) goes to the very end. Before um there is always a comma.
This part has no subject and no verb with an ending. So it only works when both parts are about the same person: Otti learns, and Otti wants to work.
| Main clause | um … zu |
|---|---|
| Otti lernt Deutsch, | um in Berlin zu arbeiten. |
| Kalle steht früh auf, | um in den Wald zu gehen. |
| Wir sparen Geld, | um eine Reise zu machen. |
Damit: another person
When the two parts are about different people, use damit. Damit works like weil: a whole clause with a subject, and the verb at the end. Ich erkläre es dir noch einmal, damit du es verstehst.
With the same person, damit is possible too, but um … zu is shorter and sounds more natural: Ich lerne viel, damit ich die Prüfung bestehe. Ich lerne viel, um die Prüfung zu bestehen.
| Who? | Example |
|---|---|
| the same person | Ich lerne viel, um die Prüfung zu bestehen. |
| the same person | Ich lerne viel, damit ich die Prüfung bestehe. |
| another person | Ich erkläre es dir, damit du es verstehst. |
Zu after verbs and phrases
Many verbs and phrases take a second verb with zu, without um: Ich habe vergessen, dich anzurufen. Es ist wichtig, genug zu schlafen. Hast du Lust, ins Kino zu gehen?
Common ones are vergessen, anfangen, aufhören, versprechen, Lust haben, Zeit haben, es ist wichtig and es ist schwer. The part with zu usually comes after a comma, at the end of the sentence.
| Start of the sentence | zu + infinitive |
|---|---|
| Ich habe vergessen, | dich anzurufen. |
| Es ist wichtig, | genug zu schlafen. |
| Hast du Lust, | ins Kino zu gehen? |
| Lotte hat angefangen, | Portugiesisch zu lernen. |

Separable verbs and modal verbs
With a separable verb, zu goes between the two parts, and it all stays one word: anrufen → anzurufen, aufstehen → aufzustehen, einkaufen → einzukaufen. After um it is the same: um früh aufzustehen.
Modal verbs never take zu: Ich muss morgen früh aufstehen, not Ich muss morgen früh aufzustehen. Compare: Es ist schwer, früh aufzustehen.
| Infinitive | With zu |
|---|---|
| anrufen | anzurufen |
| aufstehen | aufzustehen |
| einkaufen | einzukaufen |
| mitkommen | mitzukommen |
