   Willkommen zur Philosophie am See! Unsere Frage heute: Darf man lügen, um eine Freundin zu schützen?

   Translation

   Welcome to philosophy by the lake! Our question tonight: may you lie to protect a friend?

   Lotte

   Für mich ein echtes Dilemma: hier die Wahrheit, dort die Verantwortung für eine Freundin.

   Translation

   A real dilemma for me: the truth on one side, responsibility for a friend on the other.

   Kalle

   Ehrlichkeit ist eine Tugend, klar. Aber eine Lüge, die niemandem schadet, ist doch nicht per se verwerflich.

   Translation

   Honesty is a virtue, sure. But a lie that harms nobody isn't reprehensible in itself.

4. Host

   Für Kant ist die Pflicht zur Wahrheit unbedingt - selbst gegenüber einem Mörder an der Tür.

   Translation

   For Kant the duty to tell the truth is unconditional - even towards a murderer at the door.

   Lotte

   Schwierig. Wenn eine Lüge ein Leben rettet, ist sie doch moralisch vertretbar - oder etwa nicht?

   Translation

   Difficult. If a lie saves a life, surely it's morally justifiable - or isn't it?

   Ein Gedankenexperiment: Deine Freundin schummelt bei einer Prüfung. Lügst du dann auch?

   Translation

   A thought experiment: your friend cheats in an exam. Do you lie then too?

   Lotte

   Hm. Dann würde ich eher schweigen. Aber ich würde so oder so Gewissensbisse haben.

   Translation

   Hm. Then I'd rather keep quiet. But I'd have a guilty conscience either way.

   Interessant. Ihr Gewissen entscheidet also mit?

   Translation

   Interesting. So your conscience has a say too?

   Lotte

   Ja. Das bleibt eine ethische Abwägung zwischen zwei Grundsätzen.

   Translation

   Yes. It remains an ethical weighing-up between two principles.

    Kalle

    Vielleicht ist genau das Ethik: kein fertiges Urteil, sondern ein Dilemma gründlich durchdenken.

    Translation

    Maybe that's exactly what ethics is: not a ready-made verdict, but thinking a dilemma through properly.
