  1. Lotte

    Translation

Thank you for being here. I'd like to put my cards on the table: I have a suspicion about your seminar paper.

  2. Student

    Translation

A suspicion? But it's all my own work… well, almost all of it.

  3. Lotte

    Translation

Page seven seemed strangely familiar. It comes word for word from a blog - no reference, no footnote.

  4. Student

Ich wollte Sie nicht täuschen, ehrlich! Ich dachte, die Quelle im Literaturverzeichnis reiche.

    Translation

I didn't mean to deceive you, honestly! I thought the source in the bibliography was enough.

  5. Lotte

    Translation

Unfortunately not. Anyone who copies without marking the quotations is plagiarising - intentionally or not. That's plagiarism, and therefore not allowed.

  6. Student

Ist das für Sie also eine Täuschung?

    Translation

    So to you that's cheating?

  7. Lotte

Formal schon.

    Translation

Formally, yes. But because you're being honest, you may rewrite the chapter by the end of the month.

  8. Student

Danke.

    Translation

Thank you. Am I even allowed to use the blog then?

  9. Lotte

    Translation

Of course. Quote as much as you like, as long as the authorship is clear - or paraphrase and still name the source.

  10. Student

    Und ist jeder Blog zitierfähig?

    Translation

And is every blog fit to be quoted?

  11. Lotte

    Translation

Not necessarily. What matters is its credibility: who is behind it? Academic honesty and integrity begin with the choice of sources.

  12. Student

    Translation

All right. If only I'd asked straight away! This time there'll be footnotes - and a lot more original work.
