  1. Otti

    Translation

Frau Hilde, your grandson in Canada is already waiting impatiently for the next chapter of your memoirs.

  2. Frau Hilde

Ach, Geduld.

    Translation

Oh, patience. I'm writing down the post-war years just now, and memories won't be rushed.

  3. Otti

    Translation

So what was your childhood in Lübars like, so soon after the war?

  4. Frau Hilde

    Translation

Meagre, but surprisingly carefree. The grown-ups cleared away the rubble, and for us children every heap of stones was an adventure.

  5. Otti

    Translation

And the airlift? Did you see the candy bombers yourself?

  6. Frau Hilde

    Translation

I certainly did, my dear! Little parachutes with chocolate - whoever caught one was king.

  7. Otti

Das klingt fast schön - trotz all der Entbehrungen.

    Translation

That sounds almost lovely - despite all the hardship.

  8. Frau Hilde

    Translation

We were simply content with little. A single orange for Christmas, and I just looked at it for three days.

  9. Otti

    Translation

May I write that down just like that? Then your grandson would really be able to picture it.

  10. Frau Hilde

    Translation

Write it like that. As someone who lived through it I don't want to gloss over anything, but the optimism should be handed down too - the fresh start of a whole era.

  11. Otti

    Translation

Don't you get wistful doing it?

  12. Frau Hilde

    Translation

A little nostalgia is a must. Those were the days! But an era is only over when no one passes on the memory of it any more.
