Nicht or kein?
German has two words for "not". Kein goes with nouns that have ein or no article, nicht with everything else. To say yes to a negative question, answer doch.
Kein with nouns
A noun with ein, or with no article at all, is negated with kein: Das ist ein Hund. → Das ist kein Hund. Ich habe Zeit. → Ich habe keine Zeit.
Kein takes the same endings as ein. Before a feminine noun and before every plural it is keine: keine Katze, keine Eier.
After haben and most other verbs, a masculine noun takes keinen: Emil hat keinen Hunger. This is the accusative, the form for what you have, see, buy or eat.
| Gender | ein | kein | Ich habe … |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine | ein Hund | kein Hund | keinen Hund |
| feminine | eine Katze | keine Katze | keine Katze |
| neuter | ein Auto | kein Auto | kein Auto |
| plural | Autos | keine Autos | keine Autos |
-
Im Kühlschrank ist keine Milch.
There's no milk in the fridge.
-
I'm not hungry today.

Nicht for everything else
Nicht negates verbs, adjectives, places and nouns with der, die or das.
When it negates the whole sentence, nicht usually goes to the end: Otti kommt heute nicht. Ich kenne die Frau nicht.
Before an adjective, a word like gern or a place, nicht stands right in front of it: Der Tee ist nicht heiß. Ich schwimme nicht gern. Frida wohnt nicht in Mitte.
| Without negation | With nicht |
|---|---|
| Otti kommt heute. | Otti kommt heute nicht. |
| Ich kenne die Frau. | Ich kenne die Frau nicht. |
| Der Tee ist heiß. | Der Tee ist nicht heiß. |
| Ich schwimme gern. | Ich schwimme nicht gern. |
| Frida wohnt in Mitte. | Frida wohnt nicht in Mitte. |
Doch: yes to a negative question
If a question has nicht or kein in it, a plain ja is unclear. To say yes, answer doch: Hast du keine Zeit? - Doch, ich habe Zeit.
If the answer really is no, say nein as usual: Kommst du nicht mit? - Nein, ich bleibe zu Hause.
| Question | ja | nein |
