Comparing: größer als, am größten
Add -er and als to say more: größer als. Use am and -sten for the most: am größten. With so … wie two things are the same.
More: -er and als
Add -er to the adjective, then als (than): Kalle ist größer als Bruno. Die U-Bahn ist schneller als der Bus.
Many short adjectives with a, o or u also get an umlaut: alt → älter, groß → größer, jung → jünger, warm → wärmer.
Adjectives that end in -er or -el drop an e: teuer → teurer, dunkel → dunkler.
| Base form | Comparative |
|---|---|
| schnell | schneller |
| klein | kleiner |
| alt | älter |
| groß | größer |
| jung | jünger |
| teuer | teurer |
The most: am -sten
For the top of the list, say am and add -sten: am schnellsten, am kleinsten. The umlaut stays: am jüngsten, am wärmsten.
After -t, -d, -s, -sch, -ß or -z add an e first, so you can say it: am ältesten, am heißesten, am kürzesten. Groß is the exception: am größten.
| Base form | Superlative |
|---|---|
| schnell | am schnellsten |
| jung | am jüngsten |
| alt | am ältesten |
| heiß | am heißesten |
| kurz | am kürzesten |
| groß | am größten |

The same: so … wie
When two things are the same, use so + the adjective + wie: Lotte ist so alt wie Emil.
With nicht so … wie you say that something is less: Der Bus ist nicht so schnell wie die U-Bahn.
Careful: als goes with -er (größer als), wie goes with so (so groß wie).
gut, gern, viel: their own forms
A few very common words change completely: gut → besser → am besten, viel → mehr → am meisten, hoch → höher → am höchsten. Learn them as a little row of three, like a song.
Gern says what you like doing: Ich trinke gern Tee. Lieber is what you like more, and am liebsten is your favourite: Ich trinke lieber Kaffee, am liebsten mit Milch.
