A short conversation with the words of this scenario. Tap "Translation" under a line to see what it means.

  1. Otti

Frida, hast du kurz Zeit? Ich entwerfe gerade das Arbeitszeugnis für unsere Entwicklerin, die nach München wechselt, und verzweifle an den Formulierungen.

    Translation

Frida, have you got a moment? I'm drafting the reference for our developer who's moving to Munich, and the wording is driving me to despair.

  2. Frida

Zeig mal her. „Sie war stets bemüht“ - um Himmels willen, Otti, das klingt nach einer glatten Fünf!

    Translation

Let me see. "She always made an effort" - good heavens, Otti, that sounds like a straight fail!

  3. Otti

    Translation

Really? But I meant to praise her dedication with that.

  4. Frida

Das ist ja das Tückische an diesen Floskeln: Was freundlich klingt, ist oft verschlüsselte Kritik. „Bemüht“ heißt im Klartext: versucht, aber nicht geschafft.

    Translation

That's the treacherous thing about these stock phrases: what sounds friendly is often coded criticism. "Made an effort" means, in plain language: tried, but didn't manage it.

  5. Otti

    Translation

And yet her work was impeccable. Without her the app would never have launched on time.

  6. Frida

    Translation

Then write it like that. For the top grade you need the sentence "always to our fullest satisfaction" in the performance assessment.

  7. Otti

„Vollste“? Das geht grammatisch doch gar nicht - voll ist voll!

    Translation

"Fullest"? That's not even grammatical - full is full!

  8. Frida

Grammatisch nicht, im Zeugnisdeutsch schon. Und bescheinige ihr ruhig konkret ihre Sorgfalt und dass sie absolut zuverlässig war.

    Translation

Not grammatically, but in reference German it is. And feel free to attest specifically to her thoroughness and to how absolutely reliable she was.

  9. Otti

Und die Tätigkeiten? Die Suchfunktion hat sie ja praktisch allein gebaut.

    Translation

And her duties? She practically built the search function on her own.

  10. Frida

Unbedingt nennen, das sagt mehr als jedes Lob. Und am Ende ein wohlwollender Schlusssatz: Bedauern, Dank und gute Wünsche.

    Translation

Definitely mention them, that says more than any praise. And at the end a kind closing sentence: regret, thanks and good wishes.

  11. Otti

    Translation

Good. And on top of that I'll write her a personal letter of recommendation, as a reference for Munich.

  12. Frida

Ehrlich, genau und wohlwollend - so ein Zeugnis hätte ich auch gern einmal.

    Translation

Honest, precise and kind - I'd like a reference like that myself one day.
