   Und, Ihr erstes Seminar - wie war's?

   Translation

   So, your first seminar - how was it?

2. 

   Lotte

   Ehrlich gesagt: zäh. Zwanzig Studierende, eine Frage und kein einziger Wortbeitrag.

   Translation

   To be honest: heavy going. Twenty students, one question and not a single contribution.

3. Lecturer

   Typisch Dienstagmorgen. Um acht ist das Schweigen in jeder Lehrveranstaltung ohrenbetäubend.

   Translation

   Typical Tuesday morning. At eight the silence in any class is deafening.

   Lotte

   Dabei war alles didaktisch durchdacht: Lernziele an der Tafel, Referate ab der dritten Sitzung.

   Translation

   And everything was carefully thought out: learning objectives on the board, presentations from the third session.

5. Lecturer

   Der Plan ist gut. Aber bevor Sie eine Diskussion anregen können, müssen Sie erst einmal das Eis brechen. Wie wäre es mit Gruppenarbeit?

   Translation

   The plan is good. But before you can get a discussion going, you first have to break the ice. How about group work?

   Lotte

   Damit die Stilleren in kleinen Gruppen mutiger werden?

   Translation

   So that the quieter ones become braver in small groups?

7. Lecturer

   Genau. Leiten Sie die Gruppen an, und danach präsentiert jede kurz - dann redet plötzlich jeder.

   Translation

   Exactly. Guide the groups, and afterwards each one gives a short presentation - suddenly everyone's talking.

   Lotte

   Gute Idee. Nur sind manche älter als ich, und als Dozentin fühle ich mich manchmal wie eine Hochstaplerin.

   Translation

   Good idea. It's just that some of them are older than me, and as a lecturer I sometimes feel like an impostor.

   So ging es anfangs jedem Dozenten. Gute Lehre setzt ja keine Allwissenheit voraus.

   Translation

   Every lecturer felt like that at first. Good teaching doesn't require knowing everything, after all.

    Lotte

    Und die Benotung? Ist das Referat der einzige Leistungsnachweis?

    Translation

    And the grading? Is the presentation the only assessment?

    Referat plus Protokoll. Und benoten Sie lieber streng, aber nachvollziehbar.

    Translation

    Presentation plus minutes. And it's better to grade strictly but transparently.

    Danke, dieses Gespräch war lehrreicher als jedes Buch über Didaktik.
