   Emil

   Puh, der Asphalt glüht förmlich! Und was misst du denn da, Kalle?

   Translation

   Phew, the tarmac is practically glowing! And what are you measuring there, Kalle?

2. 

   Kalle

   Das Stadtklima. Auf dem Parkplatz achtunddreißig Grad, hier unter den Platanen nur dreißig.

   Translation

   The urban climate. Thirty-eight degrees in the car park, only thirty here under the plane trees.

   Emil

   Acht Grad weniger? Nur weil die Bäume Schatten spenden?

   Translation

   Eight degrees less? Just because the trees give shade?

4. 

   Kalle

   Nicht nur. Eine Platane verdunstet Hunderte Liter am Tag, und die Verdunstung kühlt spürbar.

   Translation

   Not only. A plane tree evaporates hundreds of litres a day, and the evaporation has a noticeable cooling effect.

   Emil

   Und der Asphalt heizt sich einfach nur auf, oder?

   Translation

   And the tarmac just heats up, right?

   Kalle

   Eben. Wegen der Versiegelung sind die Flächen sogar nachts noch heiß. So wird die ganze Gegend zur Hitzeinsel.

   Translation

   Exactly. Because the ground is sealed, the surfaces are still hot even at night. That's how the whole area becomes a heat island.

   Emil

   Deshalb schlafe ich bei jeder Hitzewelle so schlecht. Bei mir in Mitte kühlt es nachts kaum ab.

   Translation

   That's why I sleep so badly in every heatwave. Where I live in Mitte it hardly cools down at night.

   Kalle

   Mitte ist halt fast komplett versiegelt. Man müsste Höfe entsiegeln und Dächer begrünen - jede Begrünung hilft dem städtischen Klima.

   Translation

   Mitte is just almost completely paved over. You'd have to depave courtyards and green the roofs - every bit of greenery helps the urban climate.

   Emil

   Und die Bewässerung? Bei dieser Hitze vertrocknen junge Bäume doch.

   Translation

   And the watering? Young trees dry out in this heat.

    Kalle

    Deshalb gieße ich täglich die junge Linde da drüben. Sie ist erst drei Jahre alt.

    Translation

    That's why I water the young linden over there every day. It's only three years old.

    Emil

    Ein Wildschwein mit Gießkanne? Darf ich heute mit? Das will ich sehen.

    Translation

    A wild boar with a watering can? Can I come along today? I want to see that.

    Kalle

    Gern. Aber erst mal ab auf die schattige Bank - du glühst ja wie der Asphalt.

    Translation

    Sure. But first off to the shady bench - you're glowing like the tarmac.
