Der, die, das: every noun has a gender
Every German noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, and the article der, die or das shows which. Learn each noun together with its article.
Masculine, feminine, neuter
Every German noun has a gender: masculine, feminine or neuter. You see it in the article: der for masculine nouns, die for feminine ones, das for neuter ones.
The gender belongs to the word, not to the thing. A girl is das Mädchen (neuter), the sun is die Sonne (feminine). So never learn just Tisch, learn der Tisch.
German nouns always start with a capital letter: der Tisch, die Lampe, das Bett.
| Gender | Article | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | der | der Tisch, der Stuhl, der Kaffee |
| feminine | die | die Lampe, die Tür, die Wohnung |
| neuter | das | das Bett, das Fenster, das Zimmer |
Ein and eine
When you talk about something new, or about any one thing of its kind, use ein or eine (a, an). Masculine and neuter nouns take ein, feminine nouns take eine: ein Tisch, eine Lampe, ein Bett.
Once everyone knows which thing you mean, der, die or das comes back: Otti hat eine Wohnung. Die Wohnung ist in Prenzlauer Berg.
| Gender | der/die/das | ein/eine |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | der Tisch | ein Tisch |
| feminine | die Lampe | eine Lampe |
| neuter | das Bett | ein Bett |
Endings that help
Some endings tell you the gender. Words in -ung are feminine, and so are words for women in -in: die Wohnung, die Lehrerin. Most words in -e are feminine too: die Lampe, die Tasse.
Words in -chen are always neuter, even for people: das Mädchen, das Brötchen. Most words in -um are neuter as well: das Museum, das Zentrum.
Days, months and seasons are masculine: der Montag, der Mai, der Sommer. So are people and machines in -er that do something: der Lehrer, der Computer. But not every word in -er: die Mutter, das Fenster.
For all other nouns there is no rule you can trust, so learn the article with the word. Every word's page shows it.
| Words ending in | Article | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| -ung | die | die Wohnung, die Zeitung, die Rechnung |
| -in (women) | die | die Lehrerin, die Freundin, die Nachbarin |
| -e (mostly) | die | die Lampe, die Tasse, die Straße |
| -chen | das | das Mädchen, das Brötchen |
| -um (mostly) | das | das Museum, das Zentrum, das Datum |
| -er (people, machines) | der | der Lehrer, der Bäcker, der Computer |
| Days, months, seasons | der | der Montag, der Mai, der Sommer |
