Separable verbs: ich stehe früh auf
Some verbs have a prefix that breaks off: aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben auf. With a modal verb it stays on: Ich muss früh aufstehen.
The prefix goes to the end
Verbs like anfangen, aufstehen, einkaufen and anrufen have two parts: a prefix (an, auf, ein) and a verb (fangen, stehen, kaufen, rufen).
In a normal sentence the verb takes second place and gets the ending. The prefix goes to the very end: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. It is the same bracket as with modal verbs.
| Infinitive | Prefix | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| aufstehen | auf | Ich stehe früh auf. |
| anfangen | an | Der Film fängt um acht an. |
| einkaufen | ein | Wir kaufen am Samstag ein. |
| anrufen | an | Frida ruft Otti an. |
How to spot them
You can hear a separable prefix: it is stressed. ANrufen, AUFstehen, EINkaufen. Other prefixes you meet often are mit, aus, zu and fern: mitkommen, aussteigen, zumachen, fernsehen.
be- and ver- are never stressed and never break off: Ich bezahle. Ich verstehe.
With a modal verb it stays in one piece
With a modal verb the separable verb stands at the end in the infinitive, as one word: Ich muss morgen früh aufstehen.
In a question without a question word the verb comes first, and the prefix still goes to the end: Rufst du Frida heute an?
